Water Damage Do’s & Don’ts

In the meantime, here are some do’s and don’ts that will help your recovery and lead to a more successful restoration.

Do’s:

  • Remove as much water as possible by either blotting or mopping
  • Remove anything not permanently attached like area rugs or other floor coverings
  • Lift draperies off the floor by looping them through a hanger and placing that hanger on the drapery rod
  • Place aluminum foil under furniture legs
  • Prop up wet furniture cushions to allow even drying
  • Move any valuables like photos, painting and art objects to a dry location
  • Pack books on shelves tightly to prevent warping of pages
  • Open drawers, closets and cabinet doors

Don’ts:

  • Do not enter a room with standing water until the electricity has been turned off
  • Do not use a regular vacuum to remove water
  • Do not lift tacked-down carpet
  • While standing on wet carpet or flooring, do not use electrical appliances
  • Do not touch or disturb visible mold
  • If the ceiling is wet, do not turn on any ceiling fixtures
  • If a celling is wet or sagging, stay out of that room
